Workshop: Introduction to Family Violence: Skills for First Response and Protection Orders

Loading Events

API Care and Counselling is happy to organise this workshop to provide participants with more confidence to provide a first response to victims of family violence.

Family violence or abuse happens to people of all ages, races, religions, and occupational and educational backgrounds. Thirty percent of Singaporeans report experience of such abuse, or that someone close to them has experienced it (The Straits Times, 10 Dec 2019). Family violence has serious physical and mental health consequences for the victim, whether he/she is an adult or a child. Professionals and concerned others often feel ill-equipped to support such families as victims may not acknowledge their violent relationships or dare seek help for themselves. This workshop will draw on relevant case studies to provide participants with more confidence to provide a first response. The legal option of protection orders will also be discussed for families with ongoing family violence.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD EXPECT TO LEARN

  • Identifying the common family relational dynamics that result in violence
  • Relevant case studies to deepen an appreciation of what family violence can look like
  • First response strategies that manage the risks to all family members involved
  • Introduction to the options of protection orders

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • People who may come across victims or perpetrators of family violence in their line of work (e.g., individuals working in health, justice, human services, and education)
  • Community members who have a role to play in preventing and providing a first response to family violence (e.g., community workers, grassroot volunteers, religious leaders, neighbours, etc.)
  • Members of the public interested to provide advice and support to extended family members or friends
