Online Workshop: Breaking the Taboo: Understanding Common Mental Illnesses

Loading Events

API Care and Counselling, the community outreach arm of the Asian Pastoral Institute (API), is happy to organise this workshop to help you understand mental ill health and increase your confidence in relating to people with mental ill health.

One in seven people in Singapore experience significant mental ill health. The latest Singapore National Mental Health survey in 2016 reports that generalised anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder have been on the rise. This is made more severe as COVID-related stress and anxiety continue to rise. However, the stigma and shame associated with having mental ill health prevents people from getting the professional help they need. This is a worrying trend as delayed treatment has consistently resulted in more severe problems for individuals and their families. This workshop aims to reduce the stigma of those who are suffering by dispelling myths about common mental health disorders. Your participation in this workshop will increase your confidence in relating to people with mental ill health and contribute to making our community a more compassionate one for all.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD EXPECT TO LEARN

  • Finding out the mental health situation in Singapore
  • Familiarising yourself with the common symptoms of the most prevalent mental health disorders such as anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Understand the lived experience of those who have suffered from mental ill health
  • Increasing your confidence relating to people with mental ill health

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • People who want to look beyond the label of mental illness and understand the first-hand experience of mental ill health
  • People who would like to respond to people with mental ill health with greater compassion and sensitivity
