SUMMARY:Workshop: Counselling Skills for People Helpers
DESCRIPTION:API Care and Counselling\, the community outreach arm of the Asian Pastoral Institute (API)\, is happy to organise this workshop to provide basic training in counselling skills to enhance people helpers’ ability to support and build rapport with those they help.\nOne key role of people helpers is the support of others struggling with stress and anxiety. Understanding how to help can be a challenge as people respond differently to the help they receive. Some may respond coldly or reject any offer of support. To be effective in such situations\, people helpers need competencies to elicit information and build rapport. This is achieved when people helpers demonstrate skills in listening\, showing interest\, and empathetic responding. This workshop will provide basic training in counselling skills to enhance people helpers’ ability to support and build rapport with those they help. Live roleplays and feedback for practice will be a unique value of participating in this workshop. \nWHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD EXPECT TO LEARN\n\nTo learn appropriate approaches to build rapport as people helpers\nIn-class role play exercises of active listening skills\nReceive live feedback from trainers on their practice of active listening skills during role plays\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\n\nAnyone wishing to sharpen their skills as a people helper\nPeople helpers wanting to develop competency in active listening skills\nPeople who need to provide basic supportive counselling to others in their line of work\nPeer supporters and volunteers in the health and social sectors\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr Tham Chee Kin\, PhD (Psychology)\, MA in Social Science (Counselling)\, MDiv\, MA Biblical Studies\n \nOver the last 12 years of working in the community\, Chee Kin has counselled on a variety of concerns such as marital and family conflicts\, sexuality issues\, work stress\, anxiety\, depression\, and grief. SUMMARY:Workshop: Introduction to Family Violence: Skills for First Response and Protection Orders
DESCRIPTION:API Care and Counselling is happy to organise this workshop to provide participants with more confidence to provide a first response to victims of family violence.\nFamily violence or abuse happens to people of all ages\, races\, religions\, and occupational and educational backgrounds. Thirty percent of Singaporeans report experience of such abuse\, or that someone close to them has experienced it (The Straits Times\, 10 Dec 2019). Family violence has serious physical and mental health consequences for the victim\, whether he/she is an adult or a child. Professionals and concerned others often feel ill-equipped to support such families as victims may not acknowledge their violent relationships or dare seek help for themselves. This workshop will draw on relevant case studies to provide participants with more confidence to provide a first response. The legal option of protection orders will also be discussed for families with ongoing family violence. \nWHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD EXPECT TO LEARN\n\nIdentifying the common family relational dynamics that result in violence\nRelevant case studies to deepen an appreciation of what family violence can look like\nFirst response strategies that manage the risks to all family members involved\nIntroduction to the options of protection orders\n\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\n\nPeople who may come across victims or perpetrators of family violence in their line of work (e.g.\, individuals working in health\, justice\, human services\, and education)\nCommunity members who have a role to play in preventing and providing a first response to family violence (e.g.\, community workers\, grassroot volunteers\, religious leaders\, neighbours\, etc.)\nMembers of the public interested to provide advice and support to extended family members or friends\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nMr. Joseph Chan\, Master of Social Work and MA in Pastoral Studies\n \nJoseph has worked in the social service sector for more than 20 years. Joseph completed his Master of Social Work at the Singapore University of Social Sciences and a Graduate Diploma in Social Work from the National University of Singapore.
