SUMMARY:Online Workshop: Essentials of Counselling: Motivating Others Towards Lasting Change
DESCRIPTION:API Care and Counselling\, the community outreach arm of the Asian Pastoral Institute (API)\, is happy to organise this skill-based webinar to equip you with motivational techniques to motivate people you care for.\n\nHave you felt helpless when someone tells you about his or her problems? Or have you ever wondered how to help someone who is having difficulties making changes to his or her life? In this workshop\, participants will learn practical strength-based counselling strategies to motivate people they care for within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. The techniques taught in this skill-based workshop are drawn from prominent counselling approaches such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) are counselling skills commonly used by professional counsellors and psychologists. Case studies and instructional videos will be used in this workshop to illustrate how to use these motivational techniques. \nWHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD EXPECT TO LEARN\n\nOverview of the evidence base and theory of motivational and strength-based strategies\nCore conversational and questioning techniques to motivate others towards behavioural change\nPlanning solutions for change  \n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\n\nAnyone desiring to use a strength-based method to help a friend or family member make behavioural changes\nSupervisors\, managers\, and mentors interested in improving others’ internal motivation for change\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr MATTHEW LIM\, DPhil in Psychiatry (Oxford)\, DClinPsy (UCL)\n \nMatthew completed his first degree in psychology at NUS. He later read a doctorate at the Department of Psychiatry\, Oxford University. This led to the completion of a subsequent professional doctorate at University College London where he administered formal psychological assessments and offered psychotherapy interventions and consultancy services within the National Health System\, London. His clinical experiences in a national public hospital have been in inpatient and outpatient psychology services where he has worked with high-risk adults with severe emotion regulation difficulties\, as well as mood and anxiety concerns. His clinical\, supervisory and consultancy work is informed by behavioural\, cognitive\, acceptance-based\, and systemic psychotherapies.
