SUMMARY:Workshop: Psychological First Aid: Helping Others who are Depressed\, Anxious\, and Suicidal
DESCRIPTION:API Care and Counselling\, the community outreach arm of the Asian Pastoral Institute (API)\, is happy to organise this workshop on equipping participants with psychological first aid skills to provide help to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. \nMental health problems can affect anyone in their lifetime. However\, many people feel unsure of how to help and what to say in times of a mental health crisis. Equipping yourself with psychological first aid skills enables you to provide help to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Your help can make a difference in someone’s life because early interventions can reduce severity and chronicity of problems. \nWHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD EXPECT TO LEARN\n\nRecognise signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults\, e.g. depression & anxiety\nStrategies to providing initial support in a mental health crisis before professional help is available\n\nLearning how to get professional help for the person in need\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\n\nAnyone wishing to sharpen their psychological first aid skills\nParents\, relatives and friends concerned for people they know\n\nPeople who may come across others with depression and anxiety in their line of work\n\nVolunteers and peer supporters in the health and social sectors\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr Tham Chee Kin\, PhD (Psychology)\, MA in Social Science (Counselling)\, MDiv\, MA Biblical Studies\n \nOver the last 12 years of working in the community\, Chee Kin has counselled on a variety of concerns such as marital and family conflicts\, sexuality issues\, work stress\, anxiety\, depression\, and grief. Prior to that\, Chee Kin worked at the Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association focusing on youths and adults who were struggling with drug addiction and drug-related issues. Chee Kin is both a registered counsellor and a clinical supervisor with the Singapore Association for Counselling.
